Early literacy coordination

Early Literacy Coordination provides early literacy enrichment for children ages prenatal through age five by engaging parents and caregivers, pediatricians, library systems and community partners in a variety of coordinated and networked activities and events that promote early access to pre-reading materials, and school readiness.

The Early Literacy Coordinator works throughout the region to:

  • Communicate with pediatric medical practices to coordinate and plan distribution of materials that would be useful to the patients and families that they serve including information about the public library, Dolly Parton Imagination Library, NC Pre-K, Family Support Network, Parents as Teachers, Sesame Street in Communities, and early literacy newsletters or articles.

  • Use a collaborative approach to facilitate fun free events for children and families in partnership with Raising Resilience WNC and Sesame Street in Communities promoting positive health, wellness, education, and access to resources.

  • Develop and coordinate the distribution of toolkits containing resources for parents/caregivers to use with their children on the topics of Exploring Emotions, Resilience, and School Readiness/Early Literacy as part of a limited special project with Raising Resilience WNC and Sesame Street in Communities.

  • Develop and expand “The Word About Words” initiative started in Swain County that highlights and encourages talking with children to develop vocabulary supporting third grade reading proficiency from the very beginning.

  • Support and encourage enrollment in the Dolly Parton Imagination Library through numerous contacts in each community.
