Donate Your Time and Expertise to Our Programs
Raising a Reader: A Coordinator assists childcare providers in seven counties in working with families to distribute nationally recognized literacy materials to children to increase the frequency of reading at home and raise the level of understanding of the importance of reading both in the home and in the childcare centers.
Reach Out and Read: Doctors, nurse practitioners, and other medical professionals incorporate Reach Out and Read’s evidence-based model into regular pediatric checkups, by advising parents about the importance of reading aloud and giving developmentally-appropriate books to children.
Family Support Network: Provide support and information for parents/caregivers with children with special needs to help them connect with appropriate resources as well as with other caregivers with similar circumstances to build community support in coping with their shared concerns
Parents as Teachers Programs: Parent educators utilize a national curriculum in a home visitation program while providing developmental information, encouraging early literacy, responding to parents’ concerns about child rearing and linking families to community resources (six county programs)
Reading Rover: Library outreach in Swain, Jackson and Macon Counties and the Cherokee Indian Reservation to preschool classrooms that provides access for children to age appropriate literacy materials, story telling and a variety of unique multi-cultural materials
The staff of the Partnership is engaged in seeking grant opportunities to provide additional funding support for the programs and activities sponsored in Region A. The Partnership has been successful in applying for and obtaining foundation and endowment support to supplement state and public funding for its work. Grant funding has been received from Federal and State grants as well as from private, community and company sponsored foundations.
Foundations are non-government agencies that exist to serve the public good through providing funding to nonprofit agencies. There are more than 33,000 foundations in the United States. Around 20% of these foundations award more than 90% of the available grants funded in the United States each year.
Grant funding has become more competitive during the past few years due to continuing decreased public funding for many nonprofits. The nonprofits that have traditionally depended on public support for the majority of their resources are now finding it increasingly necessary to turn to grants to supplement their public support.
There is much misinformation about the kinds of political activities in which nonprofit organizations can legitimately engage. It is important to separate fact from fiction. It is entirely appropriate for nonprofits to “educate” elected officials. In its broadest sense it simply means informing legislators about your organization and the issues that concern you. The First Amendment to the Constitution affirms the right of citizens to petition the government and for profit, business, issue-oriented groups and nonprofit agencies share in this right.
The creation of public policy involves sharing of information and viewpoints with elected and non-elected officials at all levels of government. Since you probably know more about the issues of concern to you, your family or your organization than most elected officials, sharing your knowledge with them is a useful way to contribute to the political process. Given that elected officials must respond to those they represent to stay in office, it is constituents who often have significant impact on public policy.
Remember, if you do not reach out to educate your elected officials on things of importance to you, those who are opposed to your perspective certainly will!
